DISAPPOINTING FOXTON GO DOWN TO WISBECH

05 Sep 2010

Wisbech 218-8 (48 overs) Foxton 180 (33 overs)

Foxton lost in disappointing fashion going down by 38 runs at home to second placed Wisbech on Saturday. Inviting their visitors to bat on a greenish surface they had them in serious trouble at 112-6 but threw away the advantage letting them off the hook with some lose bowling and fielding allowing them to reach 218-8 from 48 overs. When Foxton batted they again looked to be on top at 115-2 only to throw it away again eventually subsiding to 180 all out in 33 overs, but full credit to Wisbech who gamely stuck to the task.

The visitors arrived 40 minutes late due to traffic problems and forfeited the toss to Foxton and were soon in trouble losing the high scoring Gary Frear with the score on two. The damage was repaired by wicket keeper Simon Frear 25 and skipper James Williams 38, but the departure of these two plus three cheap dismissals saw the visitors struggling on 112-6. This was due to a very good 16 over spell from Max Bowen netting him 3-45, Jeffery Douglas's first seven overs only costing 11 runs and Antonnel Atwell beginning an impressive spell. Alas for Foxton with the end of Bowen's efforts they began to perform poorly with the ball, and slack fielding with dropped chances saw Carl Pope 22, Charles Baxter 55, Chris Clark 38 not out and Brad Apted 22 take full advantage of this and it was only Atwell with 13-0-52-5 who seemed to stand in their way.

Foxton were confident of chasing down 219 for victory and began in sparkling fashion with Atwell and John Procajlo opening with a stand of 65. The loss of the latter for 32 (eight fours) and Lawrence Farnum to a spectacular boundary catch from Ben Allsop still left them feeling they would make the target.

Atwell was then joined by Cei Sanderson and pushed the total to 115 before he was stumped for an impressive knock of 60 containing 13 fours. Wickets then began to fall regularly to medium pacer Allsop and off spinner Craig Johnson and Foxton slumped to 134-7. Hopes were raised with a partnership of 34 from Bowen (16) and Douglas (24), but the fall of the fast bowler saw the hosts all out for 180, 39 runs short of their goal. Wisbech were left to thank main wicket takers Allsop 3-55 and Johnson 5-46 for their victory.

Next week Foxton visit Sawston for their final game this season.
