MISSED CHANCES PROVE COSTLY

01 Aug 2011

TUCKER PREMIER DIV. 1

Foxton 1st XI 232-9 (48 overs)  March 1st XI 162-7 (48 overs

Several dropped catches and some poor fielding cost Foxton the chance of beating and closing the points gap on league leaders March in their drawn home game on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and decided to bowl and this looked to be the correct decision as they had Antonnel Atwell, Peter Moor and skipper Lawrence Farnum back in the pavilion with only 22 on the board. Opener Gareth Roots was then joined by Adam Webster whose first task was to avert a hat trick ball from opening bowler Matt Wilcox, this he successfully accomplished and they then began to repair the damage with a stand of 71. Roots was again playing the anchor role, with Webster catching the eye with some very attractive driven shots. Looking set he was then unfortunately caught by Stuart Mills off Wilcox for 37 leaving Foxton at 93-4 after 19 overs. Cei Sanderson batting at number six notched a useful 24 in a stand of 47 with Roots before he was trapped l.b.w. to Mills leaving Foxton at 140-5 from 31 overs. Douglas was then dismissed cheaply being caught by James Harradine off Mills and the home sides innings again looked in the balance at 142-6. Roots now looking very solid on 42 was seeking partners to push Foxton to a competitive total, he found these in Tom Stone 18, Mark Ferrari 24 and Tyler Deas 12 not out and after the earlier setbacks they were more than content with the assistance of 32 extras to post 232-9 from 48 overs. Roots was seventh out caught and bowled by Wilcox for a patient 64 and the paceman was the top March bowler with 16-1-84-4.

Due to injuries Douglas was partnered by Ferrari in the opening attack and with the score on 37 the former struck with two wickets in three balls including bowling the visitors main run maker of the season Wilcox for 10. Shardal Brahmbhatt then joined Tommy Howgego and immediately went for his shots in a quickfire 36 but attempting a maximum he was then well caught in the deep by Webster off Atwell to leave March on 101-3 after 19 overs. At the fall of this wicket the visitors appeared to abandon any intention of a win and shut up shop with the draw in mind. Foxton rang the bowling changes for the remainder of the innings but were not helped by several dropped catches and two missed run out chances. Howgego carried his bat for 63 as March finished on 162-7. Foxton's Douglas with 16-3-71-4 was the leading bowler with one each for Atwell, Stone and Webster.

Next week Foxton I visit second placed Godmanchester I whilst the 2nd XI entertain Dullingham.
