KEALY WICKETS INSPIRE FIRST WIN

06 May 2012

TUCKER GARDNER PREMIER DIV. 1

Foxton 89 (31 overs) Wisbech 81 (36.3 overs

Aussie Andrew Kealy was the star in Foxton's first victory of the new season. An impressive bowling display routed the Wisbech batting and assisted the home side to a maximum 25 point haul. Losing the toss and unsurprisingly being invited to bat on a very damp surface it was always going to be tricky for the hosts batsmen, and so it proved as in only ten overs they found themselves on 24-4, with only opener Sharne Grant showing any resistance with 13. A fifth wicket stand of 33 between Max Bowen (14) and 15-year-old Chris Pepper (24) began to repair the early damage, but the fall of these two left the home side reeling at 57-6 after 18 overs. Wisbech's trio of bowlers James Williams, Zac Brown and Jack Hastings had caused the damage and they persisted in bowling tight lines and good length as wickets continued to fall with only Tom Stone (14) batting at nine standing in their way. After only 31 overs Foxton were finally dismissed for 89 and, although being fairly obvious this would be a low scoring game another 30 to 40 would it was felt have been a par score. Top bowler for Wisbech was skipper Williams with 4-27, with three each for Brown and Hastings.

Straight after tea in his first over Kealy bowled Gary Freear to immediately raise Foxton's hopes, but, after 18 overs, a best of the match stand of 46 between Danny Haynes and Brown saw the visitors on 50-1, well on the way to a now anticipated victory. The introduction of spinner Stone followed by Kealy, returning for a second spell, heralded the beginning of the end for the visitors. Opener Haynes was brilliantly stumped by Grant for 17 off the bowling of Stone, and shortly afterwards Brown followed bowled by the pacey Kealy for 21. The remaining eight batsmen all failed to reach double figures and had no answer to an inspired Kealy that saw him finish with the fine figures of 15.3-6-18-7, and he found the time to effect the run out of visitors 'keeper Simon Freear. Stone, bowling with well controlled flight weighed in with two wickets in ten overs which included the dangerous Williams l.b.w. and Foxton were home by the narrow margin of eight runs.

Next week Foxton visit last season's league winners Ramsey, whilst the second eleven entertain Barley II's.
