Update: June 2024
We’re now well into the 2024 season and it’s all action across the club. Here’s an update as to what’s been going on:
On-Field Highlights
1st team: P 8, W 7, D 1, L 0
The 1’s remain undefeated going into the second week of June. In the league, highlights have been an excellent run chase in a tight game vs Eaton Socon, and multiple strong bowling performances, bowling SBCC 2’s out for 44, Old Leysians for 87 and Wisbech for 74. Captain Lewys Hill has been the pick of the bowlers, already recording 23 wickets, closely following by Sam Beer with 20. Both have taken 6-wicket halls, Lewys with 6/8 vs SBCC and Sam 6/39 (including a hat-trick!) vs Burwell. Johnny Atkinson and Harry Hopwood are the in-form batters, both averaging close to 50.
Last weekend the 1’s progressed in the National Village Cup as they overcame Barney & Fulmodeston CC in the Cambs & Norfolk regional final. Moving into the national rounds, we now host Chestfield CC from Kent on Sunday 23rd June, in what should be a great day!
2nd team: P 5, W 4, L 1
The 2’s have also had an excellent start to their season and currently sit second in the league with a game in hand. Aussie recruit, Brodie Murphy, has been a handful with the ball, taking 14 wickets so far, which included an amazing 8/27 vs Barnack. With the bat, Ajaz Akhtar has shown to be a fantastic addition, scoring almost 200 runs at an average of 40 (to go with his 9 wickets). The best performance however goes to Alex Hooley for his 100 vs Histon last week, which meant the 2’s ran out comfortable 73 run winners. It’s been great to see a more regular group playing in the 2’s this year, and as players return from uni and school, this side should continue to get stronger.
3rd team: P 4, W 2, L 2
A 3’s squad made up of plenty of youth mixed in with some experienced players, have done well to record 2 wins to go with 2 defeats in their 4 completed matches to date. Nik Adams, another excellent new recruit, leads the run charts with 171 runs at an average of 86 and his 89 not out to see the team home against Ashwell was a quality knock. Ollie Gadsby, in his one game so far this year, peeled off 105 in the 3’s other win, this time against Cambridge NCI. It’s been great to see plenty of younger players getting good opportunities in adult cricket, in particular Johnny Price, Josh Saunders, Connor Vestey, Arthur Pendleton and Jake Boyle. Big thanks to Dean Saunders and Nigel Gadsby for their leadership of the 3’s so far this year.
Midweek team: P 6, W 3, L 3
The midweek team have done well so far in a competitive league. The aim of the team is to act as an extension to training and give young players an opportunity to play adult cricket – with winning being a bonus! The skipper, Harry Hopwood, has led from the front with the bat, racking up 192 runs so far. There have been plenty of highlights from the 6 completed games but standout is probably the fielding in the match vs SBCC, which included an amazing diving catch from Gareth and a direct run out from Harry. Thanks to Henry Campbell for all his off-field administration work.
Junior Section
Our Junior section has grown significantly this year with 50+ members. Led by our Aussie Head Coach, Jason Coleman, he has been well supported by overseas players Fergus and Brodie and the sessions have been well attended with ages ranging from 5 to 17. Unfortunately the first under 17’s game this week fell victim to the rain, but fingers crossed this will get underway soon! As always, many thanks to Clara and Ravi for their continued work on Junior administration.
Ground
Matt and Chipper have done a fantastic job battling the rain to get the Recreation Ground back in excellent shape. With the season now in full swing there is cricket multiple times a week at Foxton as well as the weekend. As ever, our thanks to everyone who is involved in maintaining the ground!
Social update
We had an excellent curry night in May, with food from The Tiffin Truck – big thanks to Krishna for helping get this organised. All club members can get a 15% discount when eating at their restaurant in Cambridge or on take-away if you mention Foxton Granta CC. Everyone has also been enjoying plenty of time in The White Horse pub, where we’re always well hosted by Bev with plenty of ‘nugs and chips’ on match days!
