End of season wrap up

As we close out a fantastic cricket season, we are pleased to share our September Update with you. This year has been one for the history books, and we couldn’t have done it without you!

1st team: P 29, W 19, D 2, C 4, L 4

The 1st XI's season was highlighted by their triumph in the Village Cup, culminating in a memorable win at Lord’s on 15th September. Their league campaign was solid, finishing 3rd in a 12-team division. Ramsey set the early pace and, despite a few stumbles, remained uncatchable. Highlights included a tight run chase against Eaton Socon and several stand-out bowling displays, dismissing SBCC 2’s for 44, Old Leysians for 87, and Wisbech for 74. Captain Lewys Hill led from the front, topping the bowling charts with 53 wickets, closely followed by newcomer Sam Beer with 49 wickets. Both registered six-wicket hauls, with Lewys taking 6/8 against SBCC, and Sam achieving 6/39 (including a hat-trick!) against Burwell. Special mention to Aussie import Fergus Fergusson, who bowled well in unfamiliar conditions to claim 24 wickets. On the batting side, Johnny Atkinson (666 runs @ 37.00) and Harry Hopwood (655 runs @ 32.75) were the top performers, while another new signing, Richard Kaufman, scored two centuries (110 vs Dumbleton & 100 vs Saffron Walden 2’s).

2nd team: P 16, W 10, C 3, L 3

The 2nd XI had a fantastic season, securing second place in their league with a crucial final-day victory. Aussie pacer Brodie Murphy was a force with the ball, taking 20 wickets, including a remarkable 8/27 against Barnack. The experienced Ajaz Akhtar, proved to be a tremendous asset, scoring nearly 400 runs, along with 12 wickets. Notable innings included Alex Hooley’s century against Histon, Dougie Rice’s unbeaten 101 against Waresley, and Johnny Atkinson’s 90* against Barnack. A more consistent squad this year played a pivotal role in the team’s success, providing a solid foundation for the future. A big thank you to Jason Coleman for his continued leadership as captain.

3rd team: P 16, W 5, C 4, L 8

The 3rd XI, a blend of youth and experience, had a challenging season but still managed to secure 5 victories, with some standout performances. Nik Adams, another key recruit, scored 361 runs at an impressive average of 45, including a superb unbeaten 89 in the win against Ashwell. Other notable innings came from Ollie Gadsby, who scored 105 against Cambridge NCI, and Ben Floto, with a commanding 112 against Rickling. It was great to see many younger players gaining valuable experience in adult cricket, including Johnny Price, Josh Saunders, Connor Vestey, Arthur Pendleton, and Jake Boyle. A big thanks to Dean Saunders, Nigel Gadsby, and Nik Adams for their leadership both on and off the field.

Midweek team: P 11, W 6,C 1, L 4

The Midweek XI enjoyed a remarkable season, crowned by their first-ever Division 1 title. Even more impressive was their focus on giving younger players opportunities to develop in adult cricket, with winning as a bonus. Brodie Murphy topped the run charts with 236 runs, supported by captain Harry Hopwood, who contributed 220 runs. Key moments included some excellent fielding in the game against SBCC, featuring a stunning diving catch from Gareth Wesselman and a direct-hit run-out by Harry, as well as a thrilling high-scoring chase to secure the title against Newmarket in the final match. Special thanks to Henry Campbell for his exceptional off-field organisation, including the well-attended end-of-season curry at club sponsors, The Tiffin Truck.

Junior section

Our junior section has seen remarkable growth this season, with increased participation across all age groups, ranging from 5 to 17. Under the expert guidance of our Head Coach, Jason Coleman, and the valuable support of overseas players Fergus and Brodie, our training sessions were well-attended and full of energy. While the season posed challenges with numerous fixture cancellations beyond our control, there were several standout moments. The newly formed Under-17s delivered an impressive performance, securing a 63-run victory against Fulbourn CC, while the Under-11s enjoyed some memorable matches, including a well-earned win against Little Shelford. Looking ahead to 2025, we are eager to continue expanding our junior section. Plans are already in place for winter training, so stay tuned for further details!
