Foxton Granta CC News story

2025 Season Preview

31 Mar 2025

Is it the cricket season already?

Here at the cricket club, we’re still looking back fondly on our fantastic day out at Lord’s, where we made history by securing our first-ever National Village Cup title. While we take a moment to reflect on this achievement, our focus now shifts to an exciting new season ahead, which kicks off next month.

The First Team will be looking to carry forward the momentum from last year’s cup win and challenge for honours in the Onyx Cricket Cambs & Hunts Premier Div. 1, while the Two’s and Three’s aim for strong seasons in Premier Div. 3 and CCA Junior 2. We’ll also be looking to defend our titles in both the National Village Cup and Division 1 of the Midweek League.

Hobbsy

We were deeply saddened in February by the news that Alan Hobbs had passed away. Alan was part of Cambridge Granta for over 50 years, playing, captaining, and managing the first team. Following the merger, he became President of Foxton Granta. He was incredibly passionate about cricket and gave so much to the game over the years. Alan was a legend of the local game, and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts continue to be with Linda along with their family and friends. Alan’s funeral was well attended, in particular by many former Cambridge Granta players who turned up to pay their respects to Hobbsy.

New faces

Winter nets have been well attended, and recruitment has gone well, with several local signings across all three teams. We’re delighted to welcome two young Kiwis joining us for the summer - Max Sargentina, a 21-year-old opening bowler and middle-order batter, and Louis Ayres, an 18-year-old all-rounder. Both come highly regarded from Karori Cricket Club in Wellington, the home of former Granta overseas player and current professional cricketer, Peter Younghusband. Many thanks to Johnny Atkinson for his efforts setting this up and to Tim and Sam Lee for hosting the boys at their home in Shepreth. We’re sure the lads will have a great time on and off the field with the Foxes!

Junior section

As always, we’re keen to grow our Junior section, with cricket available for ages 7 to 18. The Juniors will once again be under the guidance of Head Coach Jason Coleman, who returns for another season, supported by our two overseas players and club coaches to help young cricketers transition into senior cricket. To get involved, sign up here or contact Clara Cheng (foxtongrantacc@gmail.com) for more information.

The Fox Den

For 2025, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of ‘The Fox Den’, the official supporters’ club of Foxton Granta Cricket Club! This new initiative is designed to bring together everyone who shares a passion for our club – from local residents to former players. We’re looking to create a thriving supporters’ network, uniting past and present members while welcoming new faces. Membership of The Fox Den will be £50 for the 2025 season and is open to anyone connected to the club. If you would like to join, please click here or contact a member of the committee.

Artificial nets project

The committee have been focusing their efforts during the off-season on advancing the construction of new artificial cricket nets at Foxton Recreation Ground. The planning process has been challenging and remains ongoing. While this is a complex initiative that requires significant time and effort, we are optimistic that this project is progressing in the right direction, albeit slower than hoped. We will continue to keep you updated.

Thank you sponsors

We’re pleased to confirm that most of last season’s sponsors have renewed their support, and we’ve also welcomed some new partners to help us continue progressing and providing opportunities for all, regardless of age or skill level. A huge thank you to all our supporters and sponsors - we’re looking forward to seeing you down at The Rec this summer, especially for those exciting Village Cup games on Sundays. Details of the annual sponsors day will be confirmed once the season is underway.
