GRASSHOPPERS NOT STRONG ENOUGH

20 Jun 2011

PERSIMMON VILLAGE CUP

Cambs/Norfolk Area Final

Foxton 324-3 (40 overs)  Longstanton Grasshoppers 165 (39.3 overs)

In this area final of the Village Cup Foxton were much too strong for a young under strength Longstanton Grasshoppers side. Batting first the home sides openers Antonnel Atwell and Patrick Joseph struggled against Churchley and Blake and indeed Joseph fell cheaply for six. Home skipper Lawrence Farnum then joined Atwell and runs began to flow. With the score on 116 Atwell was stumped for a carefully played 38. The big hitting Jeffery Douglas came in at four and for over an hour with Farnum they despatched the visitors young bowlers to all parts of the ground with a wonderful 143 stand. Douglas departed for a sparkling 71 including four sixes, but Farnum carried on with Cei Sanderson 22 not out and at the finish of their 40 overs they had amassed 324-3 with Farnum unbowed on a magnificent season's best 158 not out (17 fours, six sixes).
Longstanton never seriously attempted any kind of chase and Foxton were able to offer some of their younger and less experienced bowlers an outing. This still proved too much for Grasshoppers and they were finally dismissed for 165 from 39.3 overs. Top scorer for them was opener Prior who carried his bat for an unbeaten 86. Foxton's top bowler being Tyler Deas with 3-25.
Next Sunday Foxton will be at home in the first national round to Surrey club Rowledge CC, note 1.30 p.m. start.
