RAIN HAMPERS TITLE BID

29 Aug 2011

TUCKER GARDNER PREMIER DIV. 1

Foxton 1st XI 177-9 (48 overs) Camden 1st XI 93-0(4) (20.4 overs)

(Revised target after rain breaks for Camden of 93 from 25 overs forfeiting 4 wickets)

Little went right for Foxton in their important home match against Camden. They lost a vital toss and were invited to bat in conditions greatly assisting bowlers. Home openers Antonnel Atwell and Gareth Roots toiled hard for the first 14 overs against some accurate bowling from Charlie Walker-Smith and Simon Gardner. With the score at 35 Atwell was then trapped l.b.w. to the latter for 20. This then triggered a batting collapse and the home side then lost a further five wickets in the next 15 overs to leave them on 72-6 after 29, Gardner and Walker-Smith each claiming three apiece. The one bright spot for Foxton was opener Roots who remained, looking vainly for partners and support. He found this in Max Bowen, batting at number eight, and together aided by improving batting conditions and a double bowling change after Gardner and Walker-Smith had completed their maximum 16 overs they compiled a 65 stand for the seventh wicket. Looking in good touch Bowen was then run out for 28 (five fours and a six), but the very solid looking Roots remained on 57. A useful 14 not out from Tom Stone along with the opener then produced a 36 stand for the eighth wicket to push the score to 173-7 after 46 overs. Trying to glean quick runs from the remaining balls Roots was then caught in the deep by Ben Barton off the bowling of Matt Thomas for a superbly played chanceless 82 (11 fours, one six) and after their allotted 48 overs Foxton finished on 177-9, but with batting conditions improving this was now felt to be slightly below par. Camden's opening bowling pair took the visitors honours with Gardner posting 16-6-34-3 and Walker-Smith 16-4-55-3. After two rain breaks during the Foxton innings amounting to 30 minutes the target was then reduced for Camden to 155 from 42 overs having to forfeit one wicket.

Following a late tea break visiting openers Thomas and Nigel Gadsby then faced Jeffery Douglas and Bowen, and after 14 overs, surviving one dropped slip chance and several confident shouts for l.b.w. they had advanced to 72. The game was then further spoiled by yet another rain break resulting in more calculations, the final upshot being an easy target for Camden of 93 from 25 overs this time forfeiting four wickets. With underfoot conditions now proving very tricky for bowling and fielding after a lengthy downpour Camden soon finished matters and Thomas on 38 and Gadsby 31 were left unbowed. Foxton picked up just four batting bonus points as consolation.

Foxton were then encouraged by the news that leaders March had lost their home match to Wisbech and second-placed Godmanchester's game against lowly Ickwell had been abandoned, but fourth placed Ramsey scored a maximum 25 points at home to St. Ives to find themselves in second spot in the table. With three matches left, Foxton now lie fourth, only 12 points now separate the top four and the destination of the title looks set to go to the wire.
The 2nd XI also went down losing to Milton II by 69 runs.
Next week Foxton 1st XI visit Khalsa, hoping to return to winning ways, whilst the 2nd XI, in their final game this season, host Babraham II.
