BATTING LETS CHAMPIONS DOWN
13 May 2013
TUCKER GARDNER PREMIER DIV. 1
Foxton 61-7 (17 overs) Camden 171 (47.5 overs)
Revised final total for Foxton following several rain breaks was 109 from 30 overs forfeiting 3 wickets
With rain expected later in the day Foxton invited Camden to bat after winning the toss. The Cambridge teams top order batsmen made a steady start facing the pace of Andrew Kealy and Patrick Joseph, dealing only in boundaries for the first 14 overs to advance to 42-2, it was only in the fifteenth over that the first single arrived, a remarkable statistic. Mark Ferrari's medium pace was then introduced and at once put a brake on the run rate, ably backed by the off spin of Chris Kroeger, and after 32 overs Camden were 92-4. The mainstay of the visitors effort being 57 from 93 balls from Keith Vincent who was sixth man out having been dropped early in his innings. Kealy returned for a second spell after 33 overs and bagged four wickets in his last six overs, but a brisk 29 from 26 balls from Nick Wells pushed Camden to a competitive final all out total of 171 from 47.5 overs. Kealy posted another impressive return of 15-4-38-5, and Ferrari a steady 12.5-2-41-2.
A short rain break either side of an early taken tea then resulted in a reduced overs match, but with the wicket now dampish and Camden's experienced seam attack of Phil Edwards and Simon Gardner operating with the new ball batting now appeared challenging. Alas for Foxton no one rose to this and a succession of low scores now saw the innings faltering. Two further rain interruptions resulted in another revised total, now standing at 109 from 30 overs forfeiting three wickets. Edwards bagged the seventh and final wicket required with the Foxton total showing a lowly 61 to finish with 4-34 with Gardner returning 3-25. Ironically for the hosts had they survived another three overs and scored 11 runs they would have won the match as shortly following the finish heavy rain ensued.
Next week Foxton entertain bottom side N.C.I. whilst the second XI visit Buntingford II.
