DISAPPOINTMENT IN VILLAGE CUP
01 Jul 2013
THE CRICKETER VILLAGE CUP (ROUND 5)
Mistley 251-5 (40 overs) Foxton 75 (21.5 overs)
Hopes of further progress for Foxton in this national village competition were well and truly dashed at Mistley on Sunday on a glorious sunny day. Batting first the Essex side had the Foxton bowlers under pressure almost immediately with a flying start that saw 50 on the board after only eight overs including 42 for opener Michael Griggs. A challenging total was assured as the hundred duly arrived after only 17 overs. The introduction of spin from Adam Webster and Nick McLellan managed to stem the scoring rate marginally and McLellan bagged a couple of wickets by dint of two good catches in the deep from Ada Cambridge. A fifth wicket stand of 85 from ex Suffolk player Richard Pineo (70) and Matthew Bibby (59 n.o.) then pushed Mistley to 251-5 from their 40 overs with Foxton bowlers and fielders feeling the heat in more ways than one and very glad of the tea break and some respite.
A very impressive opening bowling spell by pacemen Kyran Young and Pineo virtually ended any hopes the visitors had and after only 11 overs the scoreboard revealed the carnage at 27-6. The curtain came down for Foxton after only 21.5 overs as they subsided to 75 all out with only Gareth Roots, Ada Cambridge and Mark Ferrari with 16 each recording double figure scores. For Mistley Pineo returned 4-23 and Young 3-9.
Foxton players and supporters had the consolation of enjoying the weather and the superb hospitality supplied by Mistley Cricket Club and wish them luck and success in the next round.
