STALEMATE ENDS WINNING RUN

11 Aug 2013

TUCKER GARDNER PREMIER DIV. 1

Foxton 202-8 (48 overs)  Ramsey 180-8 (48 overs)

After seven successive wins Foxton had to be content with a draw in their home fixture against Ramsey. Batting first after losing the toss the hosts openers Henry Hunter and Cei Sanderson gave them a solid platform against the pace of Michael Kay and the nagging consistency of slow medium David Carlaw. With the ball moving occasionally off the seam Foxton were content after 12 overs to have advanced to 47. Five consecutive maiden overs then saw the run rate dip below three an over and at the drinks break after 24 overs they stood on 68-0. Ramsey rued the fact they had spilt three sharp chances together with some slack fielding. Carlaw then made the breakthrough in the 30th over claiming Sanderson for a watchful 43 from 84 balls caught behind by Luke Stewart. After completing 32 overs with the hosts total on 120-1 Kay and Carlaw gave way to spin from Ramsey skipper Taylor West and the medium pace of Mark Edwards. Jeffery Douglas (10) promoted up the order in the search for quick runs was then West's first victim. With the total on 150-2 after 36 overs Hunter was caught behind from the bowling of Edwards for a superb 86 from 114 balls with 13 fours. He has now completed 1,000 runs for the season with over 800 in the league where he averages over 50. Home skipper Gareth Roots (10), Adam Webster (16) and James Coe (20) then sacrificed their wickets in the run chase. Ramsey bagged two more late scalps but Foxton were fairly content at tea to post 202-8 from 48 overs. West was the top visitors bowler with 4-53 and Edwards returning 3-37.
At the resumption Foxton opted to use the old ball and Andrew Kealy at once trapped Michael Cafferkey l.b.w. with only his second delivery. Simon Cafferkey (23) and Luke Stewart with a second wicket stand of 34 then steadied Ramsey's ship but the former then fell to a superb diving catch at slip by Douglas from the spin of Webster. The new ball was taken after 21 overs and Kealy claimed the important wicket of Stewart (30) caught at first slip by Webster to leave the match in the balance with the Ramsey total on 67-3 after 22 overs. The visitors middle order all batted well and West (11), Jon Cade (21) and Jordon Cafferkey (31) tilted the balance in Ramsey's favour and after 35 overs they were 133-4 needing just over five an over for victory. Mark Edwards batting at seven was the pick of the visitors batting with 41 n.o. but an unfortunate run out at the other end together with the fall of another two wickets had Ramsey shutting up shop in the fast few overs and at the finish they were just 23 runs short on 180-8. The wickets were shared between the home sides bowlers with two each for Douglas, Webster and Kealy with one for Deas. All in all a draw was a fair result in an absorbing game of cricket played in a fine spirit.
An under strength 2nd XI lost to Barley II but with three games remaining stay on top of their league. Next week the 1st XI visit top of the table Wisbech whilst the II's entertain Mill Green.
