SPIN SEALS IT FOR WISBECH
18 Aug 2013
TUCKER GARDNER PREMIER DIV. 1
Wisbech 212-9 (48 overs) Foxton 119 (38.3 overs)
Foxton were well beaten by 93 runs on their visit to league leaders Wisbech. The home side chose to bat after winning the toss on a dry dusty worn surface that appeared to have been devoid of moisture for a considerable period. The hosts top order of Gary Freear (20), Alan Burton (47), Josh Bowers (29), James Williams (33) and Simon Freear (20) all batted solidly against the pace and swing of Andrew Kealy, Jeffery Douglas and Tyler Deas and at the drinks interval after 24 overs the total stood on 117-2 and a very large total appeared possible. The introduction of acting skipper Adam Webster just before the break bowling spin, along with Deas and fast medium Chris Pepper bowling at the tail of the innings, coupled with good fielding, restricted the run chase for the second half of the innings and along with three run outs Foxton managed to claim maximum bowling points but still faced a stiff challenge as Wisbech posted 212-9 at tea from 48 overs. Pepper 2-29 and Webster 2-50 were the top visitors bowlers.
At the resumption Wisbech opted to use the old ball employing the spin of Craig Johnson and the pace of Bradley Perrett, but after the paceman had completed six overs spin took over from both ends as Gary Freear joined the fray. With the slow bowlers now extracting turn and bounce from the dry surface few of the visitors batsmen appeared comfortable. Wickets began to fall at regular intervals and only Cei Sanderson (25) and James Coe (18) offered any substantial resistance. Kealy batting at number nine produced a late flourish of 26 not out from 36 balls but Wisbech opted to take the new ball after 34 overs with nine wickets down and quick bowler Williams wrapped up the match in his second over as he claimed Mark Ferrari caught in the gulley by Simon Freear and Foxton had subsided to a lowly 112 all out from 38.3 overs. Gary Freear returned 6-47 backed up by Johnson with 3-44.
Next week the 1st XI visit Waresley and the II's are at home to Comberton.
